2JZ vs RB: Choosing Between the Legendary Inline-Six Swaps
If you want big, reliable inline-six power, two engines dominate the conversation: Toyota’s 2JZ and Nissan’s RB. Both are swap legends. Here is how to choose the right one for your build and budget.
The 2JZ (Toyota)
The 2JZ-GTE is the twin-turbo icon from the Supra, famous for a cast-iron block that handles huge power on stock internals. The naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE is a more affordable entry point and a common base for turbo builds. If your priority is bulletproof high-horsepower potential, the 2JZ is hard to beat.
The RB (Nissan)
Nissan’s RB26DETT (Skyline GT-R) and RB25DET are revered for their character, sound, and tuning history. The RB25 is a strong, more attainable turbo six; the RB26 is the collector’s choice. RB motors reward careful attention to the oiling system but deliver a driving feel many enthusiasts prefer.
Which should you swap?
- Maximum power on a budget: 2JZ — the block takes abuse and parts are everywhere.
- Character and heritage: RB — especially for a Nissan chassis.
- Street-friendly torque: either NA-to-turbo path works; confirm your supporting mods.
Before you buy either
These are premium engines — verify the compression numbers, turbo condition, and exactly what is included (wiring, ECU, transmission). Forced-induction motors like these carry our 30-day warranty; always get the terms in writing.
