Before K-swaps took over, Honda tuners built legends on D-series and B-series motors — and both are still fantastic, affordable ways to get into a fast Honda. Here is how to choose.

D-series: simple, cheap, reliable

The D-series (D15, D16, D17) is the economy four-cylinder found in Civics and del Sols. SOHC and easy to maintain, it is the budget builder’s friend — great for a clean daily, a mild boost setup, or a first project. VTEC variants like the D16Y8 add top-end punch.

B-series: the screamer

The B-series (B16, B18, B20) is the high-revving DOHC VTEC icon — B16 for revs, B18C (GSR and Type R) for the legendary mix of power and sound, B20 for torque. It is the classic swap into 90s Civics and Integras.

Which should you buy?

  • Daily, budget, or first build: D-series.
  • Maximum N/A character and swap heritage: B-series.
  • Torque base for boost: B20 or a built B-series.

Before you buy

Confirm compression, whether it is VTEC or non-VTEC, and what is included (intake manifold, distributor, accessories). Match the motor to your harness and transmission.
