JDM Transmission Buying Guide: Automatic vs Manual, and What to Check
A swap or repair is only as good as the transmission behind it. Here is how to choose the right JDM transmission and what to verify before you buy.
Automatic vs manual
Manual transmissions are simpler, lighter, and preferred for performance and swaps. Automatics are right for daily drivers and direct replacements — just make sure the auto matches your engine, ECU, and chassis exactly, since automatic compatibility is less forgiving.
Match it to your engine and chassis
Transmissions are chassis- and engine-specific. A Honda K-series transmission is not the same as a B-series unit, and an automatic needs the right valve body and ECU. Always confirm the transmission matches your motor, axles, and final drive.
What to check before buying
- Smooth shifting with no grinding on tested units.
- Correct gear ratios and final drive for your goal.
- Whether axles, shifter, and ECU are included or sold separately.
- For AWD, confirm the correct transfer case and driveshafts.
