Honda Civic Engine Swap Guide: Best JDM Options for Every Budget

The Honda Civic is the most popular platform for engine swaps in America — and for good reason. It's lightweight, available everywhere, and compatible with a huge range of Honda engines from the budget-friendly D-Series all the way up to the legendary K-Series. JDM Alliance LA stocks all of them.

Option 1: D-Series Swap — The Budget Build ($300-$600)

The D-Series is the OG Honda budget swap. If your Civic came with a D16Y7 or D15B7, swapping in a JDM D16A (VTEC) or D15B (VTEC) gives you more power, better throttle response, and the beloved VTEC crossover — all for under $600 for the engine.

Best for: First-time swappers, daily drivers, budget builds under $1,500 total.

Fits: 1992-2000 Honda Civic (EG, EK)

Option 2: B-Series Swap — The Classic Performance Build ($800-$1,400)

The B-Series swap is the most popular Honda engine swap ever done. The B16A, B18C, and B20B are all proven, well-documented, and have the deepest aftermarket of any Honda engine. A B18C (JDM Integra Type R spec) makes 197hp stock and screams to 8,500 RPM — in a Civic, the result is a genuinely fast, incredibly fun car.

Best for: Track builds, enthusiast daily drivers, anyone who wants Honda's best naturally aspirated experience.

Fits: 1988-2000 Civic (EF, EG, EK) — direct swap

Option 3: K-Series Swap — The Modern Performance Build ($1,200-$2,000)

The K-Series swap takes more work — you'll need a conversion kit (available from Hasport, Innovative, etc.) — but the result is a Civic that feels genuinely modern. The K20A from the JDM DC5 Integra Type R makes 220hp stock and has a massive aftermarket. Want to add a turbo later? The K24 is even better for forced induction.

Best for: Serious performance builds, track cars, long-term projects.

Fits: 1992-2001 Civic (EG, EK) with conversion kit

Expect to pay $500-$1,500 for labor depending on the complexity of the swap — D-Series is the cheapest, K-Series the most expensive. Total build cost including engine and labor: $1,000-$4,000 depending on your chosen engine.
