K24 vs K20: Which Honda Engine Is Right for Your Swap?
The Great K-Series Debate
If you've spent more than five minutes in any Honda forum, you've seen it — the eternal argument: K20 or K24? Both engines are legendary. Both have cult followings. And both have ended up in everything from bone-stock Civics to 700whp time attack monsters. But which one is actually right for your swap?
At JDM Alliance LA, we've shipped hundreds of both. Here's what we've learned.
The K20 — The High-Revving Legend
The K20 is the engine that made Honda's VTEC famous all over again. Available in several variants — the K20A, K20A2, K20Z3 — this 2.0L four-cylinder loves to rev. We're talking a redline north of 8,000 RPM on the JDM K20A, with a bone-stock power output of around 220hp in its most aggressive tune.
Best for: Track builds, autocross, time attack, lightweight Civics and CRXs where power-to-weight is king.
Pros:
- Higher revving, more exciting power delivery
- Lighter than the K24
- More aftermarket support than almost any other Honda engine
- JDM K20A makes more power stock than the USDM equivalent
Cons:
- Less torque than the K24 — can feel lazy below 5,500 RPM
- More expensive per horsepower
The K24 — The Torque Monster
The K24 is the sleeper of the K-Series family. At 2.4L, it produces significantly more torque than the K20 — especially in the K24A2 found in the JDM Accord Euro-R. Where the K20 screams to its power, the K24 pulls hard from low RPM and never stops.
Best for: Street builds, daily drivers, heavier chassis like the TSX, Accord, and Element swaps.
Pros:
- More torque across the entire RPM range
- Better for street driving — strong low and mid-range pull
- More displacement = more room to grow with forced induction
- Generally less expensive than a comparable K20
Cons:
- Heavier than the K20
- Doesn't rev as freely
The Verdict
Choose the K20 if: You're building a track car, you love high-RPM power, and your chassis is lightweight.
Choose the K24 if: You want a strong daily driver, you're building a heavier car, or you're planning to add a turbo down the road.
Either way, both engines are available right now at JDM Alliance LA — compression tested, low mileage, and ready to drop in. Browse our K-Series inventory here.
