Nissan 350Z Engine Replacement Guide: VQ35DE Problems, Costs & JDM Options
The Nissan 350Z VQ35DE: Everything You Need to Know About Engine Replacement
The Nissan 350Z is one of the greatest sports cars ever made — a rear-wheel drive V6 coupe with perfect proportions and one of the best naturally aspirated engines of its era. The VQ35DE produces 287hp stock and sounds incredible doing it. But like any high-revving sports car engine, it can eventually need replacement.
At JDM Alliance LA, we stock VQ35DE engines for the 350Z and its G35 sibling regularly. Here's what you need to know.
Common 350Z Engine Problems
- Oil consumption — High-mileage VQ35s can develop oil burning. Not a death sentence, but worth monitoring.
- Timing chain issues — On high-mileage units, the timing chain guides can wear. Listen for a rattle on cold starts.
- Rod knock — Usually caused by running low oil. Deep knocking from the bottom end means it's time for a replacement.
- Head gasket failure — Less common but possible on neglected or overheated engines.
VQ35DE vs VQ35HR: Which One Do You Need?
The 350Z used two different VQ35 variants:
- VQ35DE (2003-2006): 287hp. The original, proven motor. Massive aftermarket support.
- VQ35HR (2007-2008): High Revving version. 306hp. More aggressive cam timing. Not interchangeable with the DE without modifications.
Make sure you match the engine to your specific year — call us at (442) 888-0318 if you're not sure which you need.
JDM VQ35 Advantages
The JDM VQ35DE found in the JDM Fairlady Z (Japan's 350Z) was tuned slightly differently than the USDM unit — same displacement but with a slightly different tune from the factory. All JDM units we sell have 40,000-70,000 miles and are compression tested before shipping.
Cost of 350Z Engine Replacement in Los Angeles
A JDM VQ35DE from JDM Alliance LA typically runs $1,200-$1,800. Factor in approximately $600-$1,000 for labor at a reputable Nissan/import shop in the LA area, and you're looking at a complete engine replacement for $1,800-$2,800 — a fraction of dealer pricing.
