The Toyota 2JZ: Why the World's Greatest Engine Is Still King in 2026
The 2JZ: The Engine That Refused to Die
In 1993, Toyota built an engine for the Supra that would go on to become the most famous inline-six in automotive history. Over 30 years later, the 2JZ-GTE is still the benchmark by which all performance engines are measured. Here's why.
Born for the Supra, Built for the World
The 2JZ-GTE debuted in the A80 Toyota Supra Turbo in 1993. At the time, it produced 276hp from the factory — Japan's gentleman's agreement horsepower cap. But Toyota, in an act of extraordinary engineering foresight, built the engine to handle far more than that. The cast iron block, forged crankshaft, and conservative factory tune meant that the 2JZ-GTE had enormous untapped potential sitting right there from the dealership.
Why It's Legendary
The 2JZ became famous because of what it could do with minimal modifications. A stock bottom end 2JZ — meaning the original pistons, rods, and crank with no internal work — can reliably handle 600-700whp with just a turbo upgrade and supporting mods. That's not a typo. The factory internals, designed for 276hp, can handle more than double that power with just bolt-on changes.
Top fuel drag cars have pushed 2JZs past 3,000hp. Street cars run 1,000whp on stock blocks every day. The engine has competed in Formula Drift, Bonneville land speed racing, and everything in between.
The 2JZ in 2026
What's remarkable is that the 2JZ isn't just a nostalgia piece. It's still actively being developed. New aftermarket parts come out every year — billet cranks, staged turbo kits, sequential setups, direct injection conversions. The 2JZ community never stopped innovating.
And the demand for JDM 2JZ engines has never been higher. With Supra prices through the roof and the 2JZ's reputation firmly cemented in car culture, a clean low-mileage 2JZ-GTE is one of the most sought-after engines on the market.
The 2JZ-GTE vs 2JZ-GE: Which One Do You Need?
2JZ-GTE: Twin turbocharged. This is the one you want for performance builds. Available in VVTi (later) and non-VVTi (earlier) versions. The non-VVTi is generally preferred for builds because of simpler tuning.
2JZ-GE: Naturally aspirated. Makes around 220hp stock. Popular for budget builds where the 2JZ aesthetic and sound is desired without the turbo complexity. Also a popular base for single turbo conversions.
