Why Los Angeles Is the JDM Capital of America
Los Angeles Runs on JDM
If you want to understand why Los Angeles is the JDM capital of America, you just need to spend one weekend at the right places. From the car meets in Little Tokyo to the drift events at Irwindale Speedway, from the winding canyons of Malibu to the wide boulevards of the San Gabriel Valley — JDM culture is woven into the fabric of LA like nowhere else in the country.
Why LA?
Los Angeles has the largest Japanese-American community in the United States. Many of the first people to import JDM vehicles and parts were Japanese-Americans who maintained connections to car culture back home. By the 1990s, LA had a thriving import scene that predated Fast and Furious by years — the movie just brought it to the mainstream.
The port of Los Angeles and Long Beach is also one of the busiest ports in the world, making it the natural entry point for JDM imports on the West Coast. More JDM vehicles and engines come through SoCal than any other part of the country.
The Meets
If you haven't been to a JDM meet in LA, you're missing out. Here are some of the best:
- Cars and Coffee Irvine — One of the largest weekly car meets in SoCal. JDM representation is always strong.
- Little Tokyo Cars & Coffee — Right in the heart of downtown LA, this meet has a strong JDM focus and a great community vibe.
- Irwindale Speedway drift events — The spiritual home of American drifting. SR20s, 2JZs, and RBs are the currency of the realm here.
- Wekfest Los Angeles — The premier JDM show on the West Coast. If you've never been, it's a bucket list experience.
